Saline vs. PEG Preps

Saline Laxative

  • Patient must drink
    - 1.5 ounces of a highly concentrated salt solution   mixed  with 4 ounces of a clear liquid
    - 8 ounces of a clear liquid
    - 3 additional glasses of clear liquids

• Colon now contains highly concentrated salt solution

• Water is drawn from the body into the colon to dilute the highly concentrated salt solution

• Body supplies large volume of water needed to clean the colon

• Loss of body water can dehydrate the patient

Saline Laxative Risks

• Saline laxatives can produce significant reductions in body fluids and cause electrolyte imbalances

• Patients may experience adverse effects associated with dehydration and electrolyte imbalances

• Elderly patients, patients with impaired renal function or congestive heart failure (CHF), and patients on sodium-restricted or fluid-restricted diets are at greater risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances associated with saline laxatives

PEG Lavage

Colyte® : the PEG lavage choice

  • Cleans the colon by introducing a solution of water, electrolytes, and PEG into the colon over a short period of time
  • Provides a solution that maintains a normal fluid and electrolyte balance in the body
  • Colon is flushed for a clean, clear visual field

    PEG Lavage Benefits
  • Shorter prep time
  • Virtually no loss of body water
  • Unlikely to cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances
  • Used safely in patients with
    - Renal impairment
    - Congestive heart failure (CHF)
    - Sodium-restricted or fluid-restricted diet
